Challenge

To ensure the safe passage of vessels from the North Sea to all of the harbours along the River Elbe, especially the port of Hamburg.

Solution

The waterway had to have a depth of 14.5 m and eventually 22 million m³ of sand and mud were dredged and dumped at various locations along the river. DEME has actually been involved in this maintenance work since 2004.
