The Port of Riga is located on both banks at the mouth of the River Daugava. To allow the port to cope with increasing volumes of coal traffic, dredging works were necessary along the channel to enable larger vessels to access the quay wall ‘ZO-19’.

Solution
DEME was awarded the contract to deepen part of the access channel, which included deepening to depths of -16 m in a section of approximately 1.6 km.
Used technology:
The dredged sand was pumped ashore in a reclamation basin but because the area surrounding the basin was too shallow, we deployed a separate rainbow pontoon to spray the material inside the basin.
We conducted the works in very harsh winter conditions with constant low temperatures of -15°C, making it a challenge for both our personnel and equipment.
