Overview of Wheatstone project from the sky

Challenge

DEME was tasked with dredging the approach channel, manoeuvring and loading area, berth pockets and tug harbour for the Wheatstone LNG project, which is located 12 km west of Onslow on the Pilbara Coast of Australia.

The Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project involved the construction of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities and a domestic gas plant. Gas is transported via a pipeline from an offshore processing platform 225 km off the coast to the onshore facilities.

In line with Chevron’s commitment to environmental management and stewardship, the project underwent a rigorous and thorough environmental assessment and the conditions that all the contractors were required to meet substantially reduced the environmental impact of the project.

Solution

We successfully performed the dredging contract in cooperation with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, Illinois, USA. Executed under strict environmental conditions, the works included dredging the 17 km-long approach channel, manoeuvring and loading area, berth pockets and tug harbour. The total dredged volume eventually exceeded 26 million m³ of material.

Our team deployed a large, seagoing, self-propelled cutter suction dredger, three medium trailing suction hopper dredgers and a backhoe dredger to execute the works. The main dredging equipment was supported with a series of tugs, split hopper barges and auxiliary equipment.
